The 3D Dilemma

Below is an Arri 3D rig…….., not mine I must admit, but one of the rigs we used a four day workshop I was at in Sweden. Is 3D the way to go…..I don’t think so, it is a gimmick, a nice gimmick, but the added cost of filming in 3D will mean it will be used only as..well a gimmick. Dont get me wrong, this is a great rig set up, and the pictures were amazing, but for me it seems the extra cost would be better spent on a better script/better actors/more time filming. When making 3D it is fantastic to have fists or arrows flying out the screen, but a lot of 3D seems to have over 50% on the wrong side of the (virtual)screen, everything is “In your face”, a bit like the introduction of stereo, the music would bounce around your head like a pingpong ball, come on guys ‘n’ gals….be gental, a little goes a long way. But it is still a gimmick.

We can all wrapped up on having the latest and best equipment, I find it an over kill to shoot on, for example, a REDONE camera, if it is only for DVD or web distribution, and no special postproduction is needed. But we are in the business of gadgets, and Norway is probably the country with the latest and best.

I guess I have just spent a good part of my day trying to link this blog with twitter face-book and linked-in, something that you think might be easy just seems to take forever, but even thou I could of got some wizzkid nerd to do it in 30 secs, it is so satisfying when you manage it yourself, bit like changing the oil on the car

But to just check I managed to get this bit.ly thingy working, I am going to have to waffle on for a few more characters, but then again if you know me you probably know I am pretty good at this waffling lark. All I want is a simple life, a life that I just have to upload my video to vimeo and some special app will magically inform all needed that it is up, either through facebook, linked-in or twitter. Same with the blog, or if I manage to take some super duper photos, will I think I have gone on long enough, lets see if this works

One of the things about running your business is how to organise your time, there is never enough, either you are to busy earning an income, running around trying to create new work, researching the latest equipment, updating web pages, paying the bills or, heaven forbid it, trying to spend time with the family. I feel I am getting a bit better at it, but there is still space for improvement. And silly as it might seem, maybe disciplining myself to writing a blog could just be the way to do it.

I have a lot of toys, and have done a lot of research it to what I think was the best value for money and in my blog I hope to go into more depth of what is good, and maybe not so good after time, also believe it or not filming can be fun (even after 18 hours in minus 20)…” Oh the laughs we had when the 230,000 kroner camera fell 20 meters because I forgot to attach it to the tripod”, so I hope I will be able to keep you up-to-date with my exploits as well. (NB I didnt really drop a camera )
